INFRASTRUCTURE
ON TRACK WITH IRISH RAIL
Irish Rail is the operator of the
national railway network in Ireland and responsible for the rail network including 126 stations on the Dublin, Cork and Intercity Line into Northern Ireland.
As part of a wider modernisation and investment programme, Irish Rail have been upgrading many of the stations' passenger lifts. This first phase of essential work has been undertaken by County Clare based, Infinity Lifts over a period of several months.
This first phase, related to 16 existing Otis Gen2 passenger and goods lifts that required updating to bring them to the current standards of EN81-20. One of the prerequisites of Irish Rail was that each of the 16 stations’ IP rated lift controller enclosures remained in place, hence requiring Lester Controls to provide ALMEGA II backplate only solutions with a full plug & play system.
Along with our own equipment which included the CEDES absolute positioning system, car top controls & vandal

resistant Lexan lens indicators, we also supplied Dewhurst US96 & US97 pushes which highlights the versatility of our plug & play system in relation to some 3rd party equipment.
Adding to the challenging nature of this project, considerable thought had to be attributed to the shipping of these
the lifts and escalators, which not only have to work perfectly, but importantly, need to fully comply with strict EN & BS standards.
Working with one of our principal clients, Lester Controls assisted with specification requirements for three of the Airport’s MRL passenger lifts 4, 5 & 10. All three lifts being modernised required ALMEGA II MRL controllers fitted with Ziehl 4C inverters and 6KVA UPS automatic rescue devices. The optional UPS automatic rescue devices are becoming more frequently specified, as they remove the delay in releasing trapped passengers when a power failure or lift fault occurs.
packages with many components not protected by our usual enclosures.
We sourced bespoke timber packing crates which enabled us to package the equipment comfortably and safely for their delivery to Ireland.
We were all pleased that the staggered controller delivery went to plan and without damage to the controllers.
We also supplied CEDES absolute positioning systems with single limit and bistable which utilises the CEDES dual camera system for the slowing and stopping limits of the individual lift cars. Also, for the shaft and to ensure full compliance with EN81-20, our package included fully compliant pit safety equipment and Lester Controls’ car
top units.
Away from the hidden parts of the modernisation, we also supplied full colour TFT43 indicators and voice synthesisers.
