 COMMERCIAL
CANARY WHARF LIFT MODERNISATION
Canary Wharf is London’s secondary central business area and the UK main offices for many of the world’s leading banking, insurance, law and investment companies, virtually all occupying tower blocks of various heights.
During the latter part of 2019, Temple Lifts were awarded the contract to modernise nine passenger, firefighting and goods
lifts at one of Canary Wharf’s high-rise commercial buildings.
Working with Temple Lifts’ project team, we assisted with the specification of the nine lifts, with load capacities ranging from 630kg to 4400kg, and travel speeds of 1m/s to 3.5m/s at heights of up to 100m. This included pre-order site visits by our technical team to help ensure the ALMEGA II controllers would fully integrate with any retained equipment being used within the modernisation, alongside a new swipe card based security system.
Modernisation work started in 2020 but was suspended because of the UK’s first pandemic lockdown, and subsequently recommenced under strict Health & Safety guidelines.
Lester Controls designed, manufactured and supplied the nine-site specific ALMEGA II traction controllers along with a range of ancillaries including a full shaft kit including CEDES absolute positioning system, terminal limits, car top control, plus Lester Controls' TFT43 indicators and voice synthesisers.
  THE HELICON - MOORGATE
Typically, one does not think of a building only constructed 25 years ago, as having a historic value, not the case though for The Helicon, this central London building was designed by Sheppard Robson in 1992 and constructed by Laing. One of the reasons that The Helicon gained its historic status by Historic England, was as a result of it being one of London’s first sustainable buildings to combine both retail and office facilities in one building that is energy-efficient and economical to manage.
Although modernisation work had previously been undertaken on the building’s lifts, the principal six-car group had been identified for modernisation. The contract award for the modernisation went to London based, MKM Elevators, who in turn, approached Lester Controls to help with an electrification solution for the 12 floors, six-car group of traction
lifts, which had the unusual setup of two motor rooms for the bottom drive systems, the lower three floors housing two of the controllers with the other four located two floors higher at the Basement level.
Working closely with MKM Elevators, we assisted with controller specification along with site visits to ensure the design provided full integration with existing and new machinery. This included for
the first time, use of our very own non- serial Blade hall lanterns with our serial flexibus system, and a new space saving design car top control.
We subsequently supplied six ALMEGA
II traction controllers, utilising the Magnetek HPV1000 gearless inverters, the package also included the CEDES dual camera absolute positioning system, with our overtravel and bi stable switches
for the up-test limit, this system has replaced the need for a traditional limit tree which helps to accelerate installation and setup time.
The project has also been supplied with our full colour car TFT indicators along with Lester's local network remote monitoring.
