 NHS & PUBLIC BUILDINGS
BARTS HEALTH NHS TRUST - WHIPPS CROSS
Part of Barts Health NHS Trust, the 734-bed Whipps Cross University Hospital in Leytonstone, E11 serves local communities within the London Borough of Waltham Forest. A hospital on the Whipps Cross site can be dated back
to 1903, when it originally opened as the Forest House Infirmary. Over time, there has been a redevelopment of the hospital and extensions which have included the installation of various lifts for patients and staff. One of these, a 27-person 2075kg duplex pair of bed lifts serving three floors, were scheduled for modernisation.
The full lift modernisation contract was awarded to Southern-based PIP Lifts. Subsequently, Lester Controls
were approached by PIP Lifts to supply not only the controllers but a range
of ancillary equipment and specific features for these essential bed lifts. This included 2 x 10kva UPS units for an automatic rescue system which when a power failure occurred, switches to this alternative supply and moves the lift, at a reduced speed, to the next available floor and opens the doors, allowing quick exit for anyone in the lift at that time.
To assist in achieving BREAAAM credits, a regeneration module was also supplied to store any unused energy and feed back into the supply network.
We also supplied our own Remote Monitoring GSM system for interrogation
of the processor to assist engineers in commissioning and also identify faults prior to attending site, along with a range of shaft equipment including the CEDES absolute positioning system.
ST LEONARD'S HEALTH CENTRE - HACKNEY
Again, working with Southern-based PIP Lifts, Lester Controls have assisted with the manufacture of three lift controllers for a modernisation programme at St Leonard’s Health Centre, Hackney a primary care centre, operated by the Homerton University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.
The project for the three lifts requiring major modernisation included an essential 24-person, 1800kg, five- stop through car bed lift, a hydraulic 13-person (1000kg) passenger lift and a five-stop, 16-person, 1200kg goods/ passenger lift. The oldest of the three lifts was the goods lift, which had been installed approximately 30 years ago.
All three lifts had issues with performance, reliability and the goods lift needed further updating to comply with current regulations.
Our involvement with this project was to work with the modernisation team at PIP Lifts, to ensure the three new ALMEGA II controllers, once built, were fully configured to work with the new machinery and equipment that PIP Lifts were installing.
Apart from the three ALMEGA II controllers, Lester Controls also supplied a CORE 6KVA UPS (Auto Rescue device) for the bed lift, full shaft systems including the CEDES absolute positioning system, car operating panels, voice synthesisers and landing stations fitted with Lester Controls' TFT indicators.
